Professor Umaru Sheu was born on December 8, 1930, in Maiduguri in what was then Borno Province (now Borno State), North-Eastern Nigeria. He studied elementary school and middle school in Maiduguri from 1935 to 1943. After his basic education, he attended Kaduna College in Zaria before moving on to University College Ibadan in 1948.
