The gumtree scam aims to gain the trust of the sellers by posting a message that the buyer had made the payment. Once the seller is convenience, he gets trapped. 

How does Gumtree Delivery Scam work?

Gumtree is a worldwide third-party platform that brings sellers and buyers together. It allows independent individual users to post their products on the website. The independent individual buyer checks the product and makes an offer to purchase.

Gumtree website has different domain URLs based on the country it is present in. For example, in the UK, the gumtree website is gumtree.com; in Africa, it is gumtree.co.za, and in Australia, it is Gumtree.com.au.

The scammers took advantage of URL variations and created copycat URLs such as https://payment-gumtree.com. The scammers contacted the individual sellers on Whatsapp and informed them that they had made the payment (a Gumtree Delivery Scam) for the product, and the seller could receive funds by clicking on the website link.

The link mentioned in Whatsapp requires the seller to enter their card details. But, instead of receiving money, the seller ends up making payments from their account to the scammers.

Gumtree has advised its users that they should not click on the link received in the Whatsapp message and never to enter bank and card details on such fraudulent URLs.

In Scotland, the users can call 0(808)164-6000 to report the Gumtree Delivery Scam messages. If the users have lost their money, they can call 101 to report it to the Scotland police department.
