What is MT Madonna Fire?

The fire has spread in more than 150 acres of forest in southeastern Santa Cruz County until the end of Friday night and completly burned down 20 acres. Initially, the fire was reported at 14:40 at Hazel Dell and Hidden Canyon roads in Corralitos. As of 9:00 P.M., the fire spread across Watsonville and Morgan Hill above Hazel Del Rd without any containment.

The smoke and fumes were seen from the far Santa Cruz and Watsonville areas. However, there were no immediate injuries (or) damage to life reported. 

Causes of Fire MT Madonna:

The fire department was investigating the cause of the fire, and they are yet to conclude. However, the fire department had announced that it anticipated the cause of the fire to be scheduled prescribed burns as a part of vegetation treatment program carried out between 8:00 A.M. till 4:00 P.M.

The prescribed burns aim at controlling enhanced grasslands and fuel accumulation. It is carried out with caution considering fuel and weather conditions.

It seems that the fire had spread from the prescribed burn area in Estrada Ranch into the forest. 

Call for Evacuation:

PAJ-E007, PAJ-E003, PAJ-E002 and PAJ-E001 zones in Pajaro must be evacuated due to Fire MT Madonna. Also, the CRZ-E046 zone in the Summit area is under warning. At Corralitos Community Church at 26 Browns Valley Road in Corralitos, an evacuation centre had been established.

Action taken:

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit, had informed on Twitter that they had deployed aeroplanes, equipment, firefighters and additional resources in the area. After two hours of the incident, they confirmed on Twitter that additional supplies are on the way to tackle Fire MT Madonna.

As a precautionary measure, the California Fire department has cancelled the scheduled TomKat Ranch prescribed burn in Pescadero. On Sunday, this scheduled burn was supposed to reduce brush on a ridge north of the town, covering 10 acres of land.

The fire department has stated that wind is not a concern as the fire is spreading due to dry tender and brushwood.
