In ‘Good Friday’, Good refers to holy. Good Friday is observed to commemorate the Crucifixion of Jesus. It is observed as part of the Paschal Triduum. Good Friday is also known as Great Friday and Holy Friday.  

The observation of Good Friday includes fasting and providing service to the church. “Service of the Great 3 hours Agony” is held in many churches. It is the time between noon and 3 pm, which as per the Bible, is considered to be the darkness covering the land of the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross.

Every year, the date of Good Friday varies. The date varies both in Gregorian and Julian’s calendars. Both the Eastern and Western Christian communities do not agree with each other regarding calculating the date between Easter and Good Friday. Some Christian countries, including Germany, prohibit certain activities on Good Friday. These activities include dancing and horse racing.

Orthodox Christians in Jerusalem observe Good Friday by a procession. The procession is carried out with the 14 stations of Via Dolorosa, which is a Latin word. It means ‘Way of the Suffering’.
